Bellevue College's Art installation representing the WAshington Large Area Time coincidence Array -- a project in the Puget Sound area measuring high energy cosmic particles.
What is it?
Inspiration for WALT Art comes from the WALTA physics project. Extremely high energy particles enter our atmosphere and collide with other particles, spawning clusters of energized daughter particles. The particles are presumed to be billions of years old and perhaps are generated when a galaxy collapses.
The collision events are rare and the particles so highly energized they inspire investigation. To study particles penetrating our atmosphere, researchers use lucite which has been coated with material that "scintillates" when it is hit by a particle of energy.
We are creating an interactive art installation illustrating the randomness and size of the events -- including art pieces based on the luminous properties of the scintillating lucite. We'll play with light and time to create an environment which makes the viewer want to know more.

About Us
Kevin Wheelock is a member of the Physics faculty at Bellevue College. Ross Brown is a sculptor working in metal fabrication and is a member of the Art faculty. Brian Healy manages the Drama department and has a background in Theater production. Other members of the WaltArt team include Physics students Alex Kinney and Ian Dempsey, Design student Edgar Escobar, and Art students Andrew Oswalt, Yuri, and Tess McMillan.

RECYCLE AND REPURPOSE
WaltArt owes much of its resources to the creativity of Laurel Lafever, Director of Campus Operations. Laurel leads Bellevue College in finding new ways to recycle surplus materials generated by the school.
Thanks must also go to Edward Biggers, Material Resources Manager and Karen Westerlind, Warehouse operator at Bellevue College for their support and assistance in acquiring surplus materials for the WALTART project.
We are grateful to have all of the materials that have been made available to us and hope our project will spawn other ideas for repurposing and recycling!
